Emu Oil: Myth or Remedy?

Emu Oil: Myth or Remedy

Emu oil is a remedy for an extensive list of ailments, but there are indeed many myths surrounding it. Today, we’re going to take a look at some of them and determine whether emu oil does in fact do what it says on the bottle.

You’ll learn that emu oil comes with many benefits, and also why Emu Joy’s range of products, from pure emu oil to emu oil cream, may be the right choice for you.

Emu Oil: 5 Myths

From skin penetration to sunscreen, there are a number of myths surrounding emu oil, here’s a look at the 5 most common ones.

Myth Number 1

The fatty acids in emu oil are bad for cholesterol.

False.

In fact, the omega 3 fatty acids contained in emu oil are proven to reduce cholesterol and the plaque build-up in the arteries.

These “good fats” are essential in promoting a healthy heart. They also decrease the risk of Alzheimers and dementia and aid in treating depression and anxiety.

Myth Number 2

Large amounts of omega 3 can cause diarrhea.

True.

Yes, omega 3 fatty acids in large amounts can cause diarrhea. However, since emu oil is mainly applied topically, it does not affect digestion.

As with any natural medicine, whether used for its topical or oral application, it’s crucial to learn all you can about the product first.

Myth Number 3

Emu oil and ostrich oil are the same thing.

Not exactly.

Emus and ostriches aren’t the same, they look nothing alike, and they come from different continents.

Here’s what’s similar:

  • they’re both from the ratite species (flightless birds of the Southern Hemisphere)
  • both their oils can be used to treat inflammation and to accelerate wound healing

The differences are:

  • emu oil generally contains more Oleic acid (Omega-9)
  • ostrich oil appears higher in Linoleic (Omega-6), and Linolenic acid (Omega-3)
  • emu oil appears to have a higher protection against free radicals
  • emu oil contains much less saturated fat

Myth Number 4

Emu oil does not penetrate deep into the dermis.

False.

Clinical studies have shown that emu oil has been known to awaken dormant hair follicles, which are found in the dermis—the bottom two layers of the skin.

The outer layer of the skin, the Stratum Corneum, is where the oil begins its work. The triglycerides in the oil create a protective layer on the skin’s surface to help decrease water loss.

Emu oil can also assist topical medications, and some cosmetic ingredients to be absorbed deeper into the skin’s layers.

Myth Number 5

Emu oil is a replacement for sunscreen.

False.

Despite some sites claiming that emu oil contains an SPF of 8, this hasn’t been proved.

Even if this was the case, you need an SPF of 30 to prevent 97% of ultraviolet rays getting to your skin. SPF8 provides little to no protection.

Emu Oil: A Natural Remedy

Let’s find out more about emu oil, its properties and why you should start using Emu Joy products today.

The Key Ingredients for Visible Improvement

Emu oil is a great addition to your skincare products.

As a transdermal oil (through or by way of the skin), emu oil’s lipid composition closely resembles human skin oil as shown in the chart below.

This allows it to travel through all seven layers of the skin as it is "recognized" and allowed in.

It is within these inner layers of the skin that it can nourish newly forming skin cells or hair follicles, making it more effective than most plant-derived oils.

So many uses

“I love this stuff. I use it for all sorts of things. I usually add it to other products to make them better. I use it on my face, stretched ear lobes, all-over body, thinning hairline just to name a few.”- Anonymous

Another significant property to absorption is that it is composed of smaller particles. This composition makes it easier to penetrate deeply for effective treatment of various skin conditions.

Emu oil has a high concentration of antioxidants and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs). Some other key ingredients include:

  • Vitamin A
  • Phospholipids
  • Carotenoids
  • Tocopherol
  • Essential fatty acids Omega-3, Omega 6, and Omega-9

Together, these ingredients have been proven to reduce inflammation, relieve pain, and provide essential nutrients to promote the healing of skin conditions.

"For years, I thought that my arthritis pain was just something I was going to have to live with -- unless I was willing to deal with prescription medications like Oxycodone and corticosteroids every day. But no more -- once I started putting emu oil on my sore hands and knees every day, I was finally able to start living with less pain. I feel like I got my life back!"

Please note that you shouldn’t use emu oil to replace medical treatment but rather as a remedy in conjunction with it. Be sure to seek medical advice before you change treatment programs.

Eczema prone skin miracle!

“Before using Emu Oil I had constantly used topical steroid cream to help keep my eczema from flaring up. After deciding to wean off of the steroid cream to avoid long term side effects, a flare up was inevitable. I researched natural products to help with my problem, which is where I found Emu Joy! I started using this product twice daily and it very quickly diminished the eczema flare ups I had been having. I was so so shocked. I now use it once daily, sparingly intermixed with Soothe my Skin. I swear it's all I need to keep my skin moisturized and calm.”- Andrew G

Miracle worker for my persistent eczema

“Several months ago, I developed two eczema spots on the side of my face. I've never had eczema before but that's what the dermatologist thought they were. They persisted for many months and I kept thinking they would go away but they never did. I didn't want to use steroid cream so I researched this product and I'm so glad I purchased! Within just 2-3 days of use, combining this cream and the Emu Joy emu oil, the spots are already 80% faded! I hardly ever take time to write reviews but this one deserves it. Thank you so much for developing these products. I'm truly grateful.”- Jessica R.
