Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to what people ask most about emu oil, our products, ingredients, and how to use them.
Got Questions? We have answers.
What is emu oil?
Emu oil is derived from the fat of the emu, a flightless bird native to Australia. After refinement, it becomes a lightweight oil with a fatty acid composition that closely mirrors the lipids naturally found in healthy human skin. That structural similarity is what allows it to absorb readily and support moisture at a deeper level than most surface-barrier oils.
Is all emu oil the same?
No, and the difference matters significantly. Emu oil quality varies depending on how the animals are raised, how the fat is harvested, and how the oil is refined. Poorly processed oil can contain impurities, oxidize faster, and deliver inconsistent results on sensitive skin. Emu Joy sources fully refined, cosmetic and food-grade oil from producers whose fat quality consistently ranks among the top 2% nationally.
Will it feel greasy?
Applied in the right amount, emu oil absorbs without leaving a heavy or greasy residue. A small amount goes further than most people expect. If it feels heavy, the application amount is usually the issue, not the oil itself.
Is emu oil non-comedogenic?
Yes. Emu oil is non-comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores. It is well-tolerated by facial skin, including oily and sensitive skin types.
Can emu oil be used on the face?
Yes. It is one of the most common uses. Apply a small amount to clean skin. Because it is concentrated, a little goes a long way on the face.
Is emu oil safe for children?
Emu Joy products are used by many parents for their children's sensitive skin. All products are cosmetic formulations with minimal ingredients. If a child has a diagnosed skin condition or specific sensitivities, consult a healthcare provider before use.
Is emu oil safe during pregnancy?
Emu oil is a topical cosmetic product. If you are pregnant or nursing and have concerns about specific ingredients, consult your healthcare provider before use.
Does emu oil have a smell?
Fully refined, high-quality emu oil has a very mild, neutral scent that dissipates quickly after application. Lower-quality or poorly refined oils can have a stronger odor, which is one reason refinement quality matters.
Where do your emus come from?
Our emus are humanely raised in large open pens with constant access to clean feed and water, monitored daily, and processed in state-inspected facilities. The fat is then refined in a food-grade facility to produce the oil used across our entire product line.
Why is fresh oil important?
Oil oxidizes over time, degrading the fatty acids that make it effective. Our oil is produced fresh annually to ensure maximum purity and potency at the point of use.
What products does Emu Joy make?
Our core line includes Pure Emu Oil, Soothe My Skin, Relief Balm, Miracle Cream, Emu Oil Lotion, Emu Oil Soap, Emu Oil Soap with Oatmeal, Banish Chapped Lips, and the On-the-Go Stick. We also offer condition-based and routine-based bundles and kits.
Is the same emu oil used in every product?
Yes. Every product in the Emu Joy line is built on the same high-purity, fully refined emu oil. The formulation and supporting ingredients vary by product. The quality of the foundation does not.
Do your products contain water or fillers?
No. Emu Joy products do not use water, fillers, or unnecessary ingredients. Each formulation contains only what is needed for its specific purpose, which is also why they are more concentrated than most mass-market alternatives.
Are your products fragrance-free?
Our core products are formulated without added synthetic fragrance. Some products contain natural ingredients that carry a mild natural scent.
Are your products made in the USA?
Yes. All Emu Joy products are manufactured in FDA-inspected facilities in the United States.
Are your products tested on animals?
No.
Are your products suitable for very sensitive skin?
Yes. This is one of the primary use cases. The minimal ingredient philosophy is specifically designed for skin that reacts to complex formulas, synthetic additives, or unnecessary components in conventional skincare.
I have a diagnosed skin condition. Can I use Emu Joy?
Emu Joy products are cosmetic formulations intended to moisturize, soften, and support skin comfort. They are not medical treatments and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Many people managing eczema, psoriasis, lichen sclerosus, topical steroid withdrawal, and similar conditions use our products as part of their daily care, but we recommend consulting your healthcare provider about what is appropriate for your specific situation.
Where do I start if I'm new to Emu Joy?
Pure Emu Oil is the simplest entry point for most people. It is the foundational product in the line: single ingredient, highly versatile, and well-tolerated by even the most reactive skin. Our Routine Guides are also a good starting point if you prefer guidance by condition.
How much product should I use?
Less than you think. Emu Joy products are concentrated; a small amount covers more area and goes further than standard lotions or creams. Start with a modest amount and adjust from there.
When is the best time to apply?
Most products perform best applied to clean, slightly damp skin, after showering or washing. Applying before bed is also effective, as the skin's repair processes are most active overnight.
Can I use multiple Emu Joy products together?
Yes, and they are designed to complement each other. A common approach: cleanse with Emu Oil Soap, apply Pure Emu Oil as a moisture base, then use Soothe My Skin, Miracle Cream, or Relief Balm on areas that need more targeted support.
How long before I see results?
Many people notice softer, more comfortable skin within the first few uses. A clearer picture of how a product performs as part of your routine typically emerges after two to four weeks of consistent use.
Can I use Pure Emu Oil on my scalp or hair?
Yes. Emu oil is used by many customers on the scalp and hair. Apply a small amount directly to the scalp or as a finishing treatment on hair ends.
Can the On-the-Go Stick be used on the face?
Yes. It is designed for targeted application on any dry or uncomfortable area, including around the nose, lips, and other facial spots.
How do I use the soaps without drying out my skin?
Our soaps are formulated to cleanse without stripping. Use lukewarm — not hot — water, and follow with a moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp to lock in hydration.
What does "fully refined" mean?
Refinement is the process that removes impurities from raw emu fat while preserving the beneficial fatty acid profile. A fully refined oil has been processed to cosmetic and food-grade standards, removing contaminants and inconsistencies that lower-quality oils may carry.
What is the skin barrier, and why does it matter?
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of skin. Its job is to keep moisture in and irritants out. When it is compromised, usually through harsh products, environmental exposure, or chronic skin conditions, dryness, sensitivity, and reactivity follow. Supporting the skin barrier is the foundation of what Emu Joy products are designed to do.
Why do you use so few ingredients?
Because every additional ingredient is an additional variable for sensitive skin. Our formulations are built around the principle that concentrated, high-quality ingredients outperform diluted, padded ones, and that fewer ingredients mean fewer opportunities for irritation.
Are the omega fatty acids in emu oil natural?
Yes. The omega-3, omega-5, omega-6, omega-7, and omega-9 fatty acids in emu oil are naturally occurring, not added or synthesized. They are part of the oil's native composition, which is why refinement quality and freshness directly affect their potency.
Are there any known allergens in Emu Joy products?
Our products are free from common synthetic allergens including added fragrance, parabens, and dyes. Individuals with specific ingredient sensitivities should review the full ingredient list for each product before use. If you have a known allergy, consult a healthcare provider.
