How I Stopped My Calluses From Ripping During Workouts

I’ll admit it: I’m one of those people who love to work out. 
 Give me a kettlebell, a barbell, a rope, or a pull-up bar and I’m thrilled. A sucker for punishment? Sure. Most CrossFitters are to some extent. 
But the improved health, physique, and strength that we get in exchange for a few hard workouts every week is totally worth it.

 

 

Here’s my one problem: calluses.

 

 

You know that saying, “No pain, no gain”? Well, after ripping my hands several times during benchmark workouts and Open qualifiers, I started to question that trade-off. 
I mean, calluses on my hands are badges of honor—indicative of a person who isn’t afraid to lift weights and move fast—but when those calluses rip and force me to miss workouts, they become extremely inconvenient—not to mention painful and unsightly.

I’ve tried all the standard remedies before with unimpressive results:

methods to prevent and treat hand callus
- filing them down with a shaver or pumice stone 
 - taping my hands, 
 - wearing gloves 
 - and loading my palms up with chalk. 
 For me, these methods yielded results that were at best temporary and at worst ineffective.

 

 

I thought there had to be a better way to manage my calluses and prevent hand tears.

 Now, not only am I able to hit my workouts without worrying about my calluses ripping, but I'm also able to chalk up less often mid-workout, because the chalk seems to stick to my hands better.
