5 Tips For Growing Your Edges
1. No more pulling!
A very common cause of hair loss is traction alopecia. This type of hair loss is caused by too much pulling and strain on the hair. It often happens to people who style their hair with:
- tight braids, twists, cornrows or ponytails
- weaves
- extensions
- dreadlocks
- tight hairbands or hair clips
The constant pulling and stress on the hair root causes inflammation, which prevents the hair follicle's ability to produce healthy hair.
Traction alopecia can be stopped by making sure that your hair is not being pulled too tightly. There needs to be a little slack so there isn't too much stress on the roots. The best stylists know this and are careful not to pull the hair too tight when creating styles with braids, weaves, or extensions. Always discuss this important step with your stylist.
2. Keep your scalp clean and healthy
Fungus can actually grow on the scalp if it's not properly cleaned regularly.
It's critical to maintain a clean scalp so that the roots don't get contaminated with bacteria. Use a shampoo formulated for dry and damaged hair and massage your scalp for a few minutes while washing. This helps increase circulation which nourishes the hair follicle.
3. Be gentle
Use your fingers to gently detangle your hair before washing. Always work from the ends and then move towards the scalp. After washing - gently - apply a moisturizing conditioner formulated for dry hair. Use a wide tooth comb or detangling brush and work through the hair, again starting at the tips and gradually moving closer to the scalp.
If you want to detangle dry hair between washings rub a few drops of a lubricating oil between your palms (emu oil is good for this) and run your fingers through your hair to lightly coat it with the oil. Finger detangle or use a wide tooth comb.
4. Stay away from chemical straightening
The chemicals used to relax hair work by swelling open the hair fibers. They then penetrate the protein structure of the hair shaft which weakens its internal bonds and causes the natural curl to loosen and relax.
The entire structure of the hair is changed, making it very fragile and prone to breakage.
More and more women are embracing their natural hair these days, with beautiful results.
5. Use the right oils to encourage hair growth
Emu oil and castor oil are two of the best oils for promoting hair growth.
Emu oil works to get rid of inflammation in the hair follicle that keeps new hair from forming. By fixing the inflammation problem you set the stage for healthy hair growth.
Be patient. Damage to hair usually occurs over a long period of time, and reversing that damage takes time as well. Apply emu oil or a combination of emu and castor oil to the scalp twice a day for at least 4 weeks. Take photos of your edges before starting treatment and again once a week. If inflammation was the culprit (and it often is) by the end of the month you should be seeing new hairs growing on your edges.
